Every time I go to Shangumugham late in the evening and take a stroll along the beach or sit in the Thattkadas or Take a Break, I decide to write a blog as soon as I get back home. But for some reason, whenever I start typing about this place or what this place is to me, I choke. The words just don\’t come out.

I am a person who love beaches more than any other place. I have been to Marina beach and Basanth Nagar Elliots beach in Chennai, the Calicut beach, Cherai beach in Ernakulam, Paapanasham beach in Varkala, Pondichery beach, Juhu beach in Mumbai, Miramar, Calungute, Dona Paula and Baga beaches in Goa but I have never found myself to so much of comfort and relaxing mood other than in our little Shangumugham beach.

When I sit there taking a sip of tea, I look around to find more than a hundred or even close to thousands busy with their lives. There are little toddlers to really old grandpas and grandmas walking along with the youngest representatives of their family. Then there are the disabled or the BPL people singing vintage Malayalam songs for money. I think that is the best part. You are thrown into a different mood every time you hear a vintage song. There is something very catchy and lovely about such songs than the present ones. The cold breeze will hit you lightly, the sound of waves act as the background music if the songs aren\’t there. Often, you can see the flights landing and taking off from the Trivandrum International Airport. There is the beautiful Devi temple. And then, you have the beautiful Mermaid.

If you ask me the most romantic place in Thiruvananthapuram, I will only give you one answer and that is Shangumugham beach. Every time I go there I wish I had a person beside me to hold hands and walk. I wish there was that special pair of eyes looking at me while we sit with legs folded on the beach and the musicians sing a Yesudas classic. Ah, love! What a feeling is that.

I hope the renovations taking place there are for a better atmosphere 🙂
